Arena Surfaces

SYNTHETIC EQUINE PERFORMANCE STABILIZING FIBRE

Many of the existing or newly installed riding arenas in France have a sand based footing. This is an good surface that with regular maintenance will give you and your horse many years of service. With the weather conditions here going from one extreme to another, from the long hot summers to the torrential winter rainfalls, it is not always easy or in some cases possible to keep the surface at optimal condition, if usable at all.

One solution to improve the surface and to keep it rideable  is to add a topper. These can come in several forms but one of the most effective, both for the horse and your pocket is a synthetic stabilizing fibre.

HH Premier Stabilizing Fibre

The HH Premier stabilizer is a non-waxed fibre additive that is manufactured by shredding and mixing into precise proportions to create a root system similar to turf with advantages over natural footing. This stabilizing fibre has longer fibres added within the mix to aid in vertical and horizontal support and reduces surface penetration, gives minimal kick back, meaning less maintenance.

These Fibre will trap valuable moisture within the surface to help prevent the sand from drying out and becoming loose.

The fibre is extremely resilient and virtually unbreakable, helping to provide superior support for your horses hoof without interfering with the natural flow of movement. How does it work?

The Perfect Footing for Arena Surfaces

The Perfect arena footing always considers the Bio mechanics of the horse.


If the surface is too deep and soft, it will have low resistance and will absorb too much energy from your horse, making him work harder to provide propulsion, which will cause early onset of fatigue

If the surface is too hard, it will absorb little impact energy and this will result in greater impact concussion resulting in bone and joint problems.

In both cases soundness of performance is compromised.

Horses working on hard surfaces will adjust their stride  and movement to compensate the shock to their limbs, whilst horses working on a surface that is too soft, will adjust their stride and movement to cope with the energy  required ncaused by the low impact of the soft surface.

Application Rates

There are no hard and fast rules on the application rate for fibre. Some may want to start off with a minimal layer to see how they feel about it and how their horse responds to the surface and if they like, add to it until they feel they have achieved their optimal footing, whilst others may choose to go for a firmer surface to start with or indeed a full fibre surface.


As a general  average you can start from 2.5kg per square metre , ideal if you are on a budget and go up to 5.25kg for a firmer ride. Because of the nature of the fibre and application all rates and bale requirements are approximate.

Applying the Fibre

HH Premier Stabilizing fibre is easy to apply. If you can, place the bales evenly around the arena. Open ,break up and start spreading. For a 2.5kg spread rate apply a layer of approximately 3cm deep per square meter over the entire arena. Using a tractor mounted power harrow or rotavator the fibre can be mixed into the existing layer of sand.. This only has to be done once, so the maintenacne is greatly reduced. After this it can be levelled using a grader.
